What is the difference between an Optometrist and Ophthalmologist?

Optometry and Ophthalmology are both fields of eye care, but what is the difference between these two?

Optometry is the practice or profession of examining the eyes, by means of suitable instruments or appliances, for defects in vision and eye disorders in order to prescribe corrective lenses or other appropriate treatment. An Optometrist has a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree and are not trained or licensed to perform eye surgery. Ophthalmology is the branch of medical science dealing with the anatomy, functions, and diseases of the eye. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MD) or a doctors of osteopathic medicine (DO) and are able to do everything an optometrist does as well as perform various eye surgeries such as cataract surgery and LASIK surgery.
