June is Cataract Awareness Month

June is cataract awareness month, so we are taking the opportunity to focus this month on the causes and symptoms of cataracts and the different treatment services that are available for you.

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. Cataracts are a common cause of vision loss and cannot be reversed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cataracts affect more than 20.5 million Americans over the age of 40. Unfortunately, cataracts can not be prevented, however, you can slow down the development of cataracts by wearing sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection and eating a diet rich in anti-oxidants.

As cataract slowly develops, you may not notice any vision changes that affect your everyday activities. However, as the cataract matures, it may create cloudy or blurry vision with increased difficulty to see at night.

When your ophthalmologist determins your cataract is ready for removal, there are several surgical treatments available. For more information on these options, go to https://www.loeye.com/services-cataract-surgery/cataract-surgery-options
